Rock Sweep: September 29, 2012...

It's time now for part two of this week's "chart sweeps", where I bring you the newest songs making their way on to the weekly music charts at Billboard magazine. This time out it's the latest on rock radio...

On the congregate Rock Songs chart, the Lumineers take over the #1 spot for the first time with "Ho Hey".

The top debut is by alt-rock god Jack White, who has had quite a career, with stints in the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, and the Dead Weather. He gets his third single from his debut solo set Blunderbuss in at #42, "Freedom At 21". It incorporates a frenetic backbeat that's probably inspired from dubstep, and it's cool and modern enough to possibly surpass the success of his first solo hit, "Love Interruption"...

Danish heavy metal band Volbeat's biggest hit so far on the Rock Songs list has been last year's "A Warrior's Call", which just missed the top-10 by a notch. Their latest, "Heaven Nor Hell", comes in at #46, helped by airplay on mainstream rock, where it's already in the top-30. And I really dig this retro-metal jam..

Over on the Modern Rock/Alternative radio list, the Lumineers also claim the #1 spot for the first week.

The top debut here is by the British funk rock outfit the Heavy, with their first alternative hit at #35, "What Makes A Good Man", and it's a winner for those who like their indie rock with a big heap of soul...

Californian reggae-rock group Dirty Heads ruled the #1 spot on this chart for nine weeks in 2010 with "Lay Me Down", and they return at #37 with "Dance All Night", featuring Jewish rapper Matisyahu, who had a top-10 alt-rock hit in 2005 with "King Without A Crown". This new jam is the usual fare baked up for the lovers of Sublime...

L.A. indie rockers Silversun Pickups had a #1 hit here in 2009 with "Panic Switch", and this time out their at #39 with the second single from their Neck Of The Woods CD, "The Pit"..

Meanwhile, on the Mainstream Rock radio tally, Three Days Grace hang on to #1 for a second week with "Chalk Outline".

The top entry on this list of veteran rockers Aerosmith, who have topped the rock songs list nine times since the chart's start in 1981, from 1989's "Love In An Elevator" to 2001's "Jaded". After a stint with American Idol, Steven Tyler is back with the band, and the second single to make the rock chart, "Lover Alot", comes in at #36. It comes from Music From Another Dimension, due in November..

Chicago-based hard rock group Chevelle last album, Hats Off To The Bull, so far has spun off two #1 mainstream rock hits, "Face To The Floor" and the title track. They're hoping for a hat trick with the song at #37, "Same Old Trip"...

Former Hollywood Undead singer Deuce made the top-20 here earlier this year with "America", and the followup, "I Came To Party", featuring Travie McCoy, enters at #39...

Arriving at #40 is the pop skatepunk band the Offspring, who topped the mainstream rock chart in 1997 with "Gone Away". They are back with the second hit from their latest, Days Go By, called "Turning Into You"...

Finally, over at the Triple-A (hipster rock) radio chart, Mumford & Sons spend a fourth week on top with "I Will Wait"...

The solitary debut on this chart this week is by British indie-rockers Snow Patrol, who topped this list twice, in 2008 with "Take Back The City", and the following year with "Crack The Shutters", both from their excellent A Hundred Million Suns album. Their latest, "In The End", enters at #28...

Well that does it for the rock side of the house. I love most of what's here, but my two top faves are the Jack Black and Snow Patrol singles.

Come back in an hour and a half and I'll bring you the latest on R&B radio. Rock on!
