Brit Sweep: September 16, 2012...

Thanks for stopping by, it's time for this week's sample of the new songs selling over in the United Kingdom this week, according to their official charts. This week the Script take over the #1 spot with "Hall Of Fame" featuring will.i.am.

The highest debut this week belongs to singer Amelia Lily, who finished third on the last series of Britain's X Factor competition. She was originally bumped from the show, but got a second chance when Frankie Cocozza (who went on to be on Celebrity Big Brother) was disqualified. Her first single at #2 is "You Bring Me Joy", a generic dance-pop number that's, well, here...

Speaking of X Factor, one of the judges from the British version also debuts this week. Tulisa mentored the act that won last series, Little Mix. She just had a #1 solo single of her own as well, "Young". Her latest, "Live It Up" features rapper Tyga, who scored a top-40 hit in Britain earlier this year with "Rack City". The staccato stutter-beat of the backdrop and her voice elevates this one over the Lily track, making it a bit more interesting, but all and all it's still just a late-summer dance-pop fodder...

Coming in at #14 is the team of DJ/producer David Guetta and Australian singer/songwriter Sia, who last hit #1 together in England with "Titanium". Guetta has had five previous #1s in the UK (including that one). It's a little more rave-oriented than that last hit, and I keep mixing it up with Shakira's different song.

British folk-rockers Mumford & Sons enter at #17 with their latest, "I Will Wait". It's from their upcoming album, Babel, and surprisingly has the highest rank of any of their singles ("Little Lion Man" peaked at #24 in 2009).

One notch below Mumford & Sons is the Killers, with their new single "Runaways". Their biggest hit here so far was "When You Were Young" from 2006....

David Guetta also comes in at #22 with Ne-Yo and Akon on "Play Hard". Ne-Yo just was at #1 last week with :"Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself)", while Akon has already seen the top of the UK chart with Guetta on 2009's "Sexy Bitch"...

The rap triumvirate of Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Big Sean debut at #29 with "Clique". Kanye's had one #1 lead-artist hit, "Stronger", as does Jay-Z ("Run This Town")...

British Bieber Conor Maynard has racked up two top-5 hits so far, with "Can't Say No" making it to #2 earlier this year. His latest, "Turn Around", featuring Ne-Yo, comes in at #38, and its his best so far...

London indie-pop group the xx has the biggest selling album in the UK this week with Coexist, and the first single from the set, "Angels", comes in at #43. Their biggest so far was 2009's "Islands", which went to #34...

Irish rockers Kodaline are in at #74 with "All I Want", and this is such an awesome video...

Adele sneaks in at #99 with an album track from her 21 set that was covered on last week's X Factor, "One And Only", it's the sixth song from the album to make the top-100 here...

The final entry on the top-100 in the #100 spot is another album track, this time from the #2 selling album in the UK this week, #3 by Irish rock band the Script (so the top-100 is like bookends, no?). The song is "Six Degrees Of Separation"...

That covers it for tonight, I really suggest you go pick up the excellent album by the xx and the single by Kodaline.

Check back tomorrow for another Song of the Day, Candletime, part two of this week's "album sweep", and this week's "robbed hit". Cheers!
