7 of the 70s: 8/23/12...

Hey guys, it's time for this week's "7 of the 70s", where I bring you seven nuggets from the Me Decade. This time out it's seven songs from 1974, the year the first consumer purchase using a UPC code was made in Ohio (a package of Wrigley's Gum).

Paper Lace - "The Night Chicago Died"
from the album Paper Lace (1974)

The First Class - "Beach Baby"
from the album The First Class (1974)

The best imitation of the Beach Boys by a studio group led by a guy not in this video, Tony Burrows.

Maria Muldaur - "Midnight At The Oasis"
from the album Maria Muldaur (1973)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6

Send your camel to bed, indeed. Breezy jazz-pop at its best.

Chicago - "Wishing You Were Here"
from the album Chicago VII (1974)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #11

One of my three favorite bands when I were a kid, with my absolute favorite song of theirs, with help from the Beach Boys. It still pains me to see Terry Kath and Carl Wilson, their loss is so missed.

The Raspberries - "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)"
from the album Starting Over (1974)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #18

Eric Carmen and the boys go chart geek with this tale of a rising star.

The Hudson Brothers - "So You Are A Star"
from the album Hollywood Situation (1974)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #21

Bill Hudson married both Goldie Hawn and Cindy ("Shirley") Williams, but in this moment during the brothers' variety show run he was top dog.

Jim Croce - "Workin' At The Car Wash Blues"
from the album I Got A Name (1973)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #32

The late storytelling master tells the flipside to Rose Royce's party.

That's it for now, stay tuned, later on I'll bring you 8 more from the 80s...
