Songoftheday 7/19/12 - there goes another lifetime, there goes another dream...

Jeffrey Osborne - "I Really Don't Need No Light"
from the album Jeffrey Osborne (1982)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #39 (two weeks)
Weeks in the top-40: 2

Today's Song of the Day is by R&B singer Jeffrey Osborne, who spent the 70s fronting the group L.T.D. With them, he had a top-10 single in 1977 with "(Every Time I Look Around) Back In Love Again", one of my favorite 70s funk jams.

Osborne left the group in 1980, and his debut solo self-titled album was released in 1982. The first single from the album was "I Really Don't Need No Light", co-written by Osborne and Rufus bandmember Hank Wolinski.

The single was a big hit on R&B radio, making it up to #3, and crept into the top-40 pop chart for a couple weeks. The album also would be a top-3 R&B record. From his next single, "On The Wings Of Love" forward, Jeffrey would veer more into a pop/AC direction for awhile, with increasingly popular results.
