7 of the 70s: July 19, 2012...

Hey folks, thanks for stoppin' by, it's time for the second installment of "7 of the 70s", with seven nuggets from the golden age of pop cheese culture. Since yesterday's "6 of the 60s" was so melancholy, I promise to be a little more jovial with the music this time out. And since it's 1979, at the crest of the disco boom, it's not that hard at all...

David Naughton - "Makin' It"
from the album Meatballs (Original Soundtrack) (1979)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #5

Before he became an American Werewolf In London, David Naughton transferred his exposure on the Dr. Pepper commercials to a TV sitcom "Makin' It", which got cancelled before the theme song took off on pop radio, eventually reaching the top-5. It later was featured in the movie Meatballs. God, I love this song. It's the perfect song to blare out your car stereo with the windows down to prove how big your balls are.

Hot Chocolate - "Every 1's a Winner"
from the album Every 1's A Winner (1978)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6

British R&B/disco group Hot Chocolate are best known for "You Sexy Thing", but "Every 1's a Winner" was always my favorite, fuzzy guitar and all...

Ray Parker Jr. & Raydio - "You Can't Change That"
from the album Rock On (1979)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #9

Another of my favorite all-time pop songs, Parker and  the boys smoothed their R&B and disco out for the burgeoning soft-rock boom of the early-80s. Spacey and sweet as sugar, this will definitely be played at my wedding (whenever that ever happens)...

England Dan & John Ford Coley - "Love Is The Answer"
from the album Dr. Heckle & Mr. Jive (1978)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #10

The subject of my first blog post a whole six years ago, soft-rock superduo "England" Dan Seals and John Ford Coley  were consistent hitmakers in the late-70s, a breath of fresh air amidst the disco and arena rock. "Love Is The Answer" was their creative peak; a suite for the remnants of the flower children...

Dolly Parton - "Baby I'm Burnin'"
from the album Heartbreaker (1978)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #25

Dolly's big foray into disco, "Baby I'm Burnin'" sported a bright pink vinyl 12" single that is one of my prized possessions. Now used for country line dancers (a real good "Tush Push" song).

Gonzalez - "Haven't Stopped Dancin' Yet"
from the album Haven't Stopped Dancin' (1979)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #26

The second most-known remake of a Gloria Jones song (after 1982's "Tainted Love"), disco collective Gonzalez lit up the discos with this joyful  lovey-dovey number. Lead singer Lenny Zakatek would go on to sing for the Alan Parsons Project in the 80s.

Pink Lady - "Kiss In The Dark"
from the album Kiss In The Dark (1979)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #37

and now a double treat. Does anybody else besides me remember the Pink Lady and Jeff show? The Japanese duo of Mie and Kei were superstars in their homeland, and boy did the music industry try to break them in the States, giving them their own TV show in 1980. And here's their appearance on the Leif Garrett show...

Thanks it for now! later on today, a special "8 of the 80's" post!
