Songoftheday 4/16/12 - I know you think I'm like the others before, who saw your number on the wall...

Tommy Tutone - "867-5309/Jenny"
from the album Tutone-2 (1981)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #4 (three weeks)

Today's Song of the Day was the seediest phone number of the 80's. Bay Area rock outfit Tommy Tutone had a minor top-40 hit a year before with their debut album's "Angel Say No", but it took a song from their sophomore album released in '81 about a girl whose number is advertised in the bathroom to put them into the top-10. Co-written by guitarist Jim Keller and Alex Call, who was in the Elvis Costello-backing Clover with a couple of Huey Lewis' "News", there's been conficting reports whether the "Jenny" is real or not. Either way, anyone owning the number was sure out to be getting a ton of prank calls.

The song also made the top of the Rock Radio chart, but it would be the band's last hurrah on the charts. Since then, the number recently went on ebay in New Jersey. Too bad the band gets no royalties from that.

Tomorrow: Marv, Rindy, and Rindy's Sax.
