Besides Rihanna's "Breakin' Dishes", which storms back onto my list with a 2009 remix, there are eleven new songs on my list. I'll start off with Senegalese-American singer Akon, who's protege' Lady GaGa is omnipresent on the chart. His current hit is "Beautiful", which is a former top-10 song in Britain, and making the top-20 in the US pop and dance charts.

Next is Kelly Clarkson, who follows up her current top-10 song "My Life Would Suck Without You" with "I Do Not Hook Up"...

RuPaul has been riding high with his RuPaul's Drag Race, and the song (s)he's been plugging on the show is finally making waves in the dance clubs with "Cover Girl"..

French DJ David Guetta teams up with former Destiny's Child Kelly Rowland for the jam "When Love Takes Over"..

Another pairing of dance artists brings Sylvia Tosun together with the production team of Loverush UK for "5 Reasons"...

Teen country star Taylor Swift mines her latest album for the peppy "You Belong To Me"...

...and on the other side of the spectrum is Reba McEntire, who scores with her latest single "Strange"...

Next is Tinchy Stryder - who hit the #1 spot in the UK with the appropriately titled "Number 1"...

The Dave Matthews Band is back with "Funny The Way It Is"....

And another former DSS pairs band Magic System with rai singer Khaled for the Ivory Coast/Algerian collaboration of "Meme Pas Fatigue", which is the biggest song in France right now...

and finally Yoko Ono brings another song onto the dance charts. This time it's "I'm Not Getting Enough", and here's the original version...

Happy Birthday, Kylie!

Kylie Minogue turns 41 today....I'm still aghast over being able to see her in October! Woohoo!

In remembrance...

Today marks Memorial Day, which honors those who have given their lives serving in the U.S. military. With the current brouhaha over whether President Obama will honor his pledge to repeal the horrific "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy that was set under Clinton's administration in the 90's as a misguided compromise to appease the religious right-wing (and one of the worst offenses of Former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Colin Powell). While too many thousands have given their lives fighting campaigns both just and unjust, some of the same who have honorably sacrificed for their country are being essentially "fired" for who they are, not how well they've done their jobs. Men like Dan Choi, member of the National Guard and Arab linguist, you know, someone we really need in fighting terrorism. Men like fighter pilot Lt. Gen Victor Fehrenbach. Gay men and women have been serving in the military either closeted or quiet for decades. The military knows it. The administration knows it. If only they would stop treating the American public like the minority mouthbreathers that need to kick a fag around to feel superior.

Interestingly, the first "Memorial Day"-type stirrings came after the Civil War, with former slaves in Charleston honoring the fallen Union soldiers who fought for the freedom (and later full equality) for all. May President Obama think about this in his decisions on pushing forward to end this misguided and hateful plan that neither follows the intent of law nor makes this country safer.

And special honor to Choi and Ferhenbach. Your commitment to the country is what this day is all about.

Let's get ready to rumble!

If only somebody in the Democratic party can slam stupid-as-fuck Republican talking points like former Minnesota Governor-slash-wrestler Jesse Ventura can. So far he's 3-0. Point 1, the easy one - a takedown of vapid reality contestant Elisabeth Hasselback on the View.

Can I say again how much of a total CUNT she is?

next, for bigger fish to fry, Ventura takes on assclown Sean Hannity, who tries his best to play the victim card. Fuck you, Hannity, you bloated lying coward.

And finally, in the coup de grace, Jesse smacks down the special class known as Fox & Friends with Brian Kilmeade especially proving what an ignorant dolt he is.

Can we just get him to fill in ALL the time?

Distant Shores Song for the night...

Tonight's DSS is from Tommy Sparks, Swedish-born but currently living in Britain. His electro-hit "She's Got Me Dancing" is welcome to those jonesing for the next Junior Senior record. And of course, it comes with the campiest video this side of "Love Shack".

You can catch more from Tommy at his MySpace page, or you can pre-order up a copy of his debut self-titled album at Amazon, or head over the pond to the UK site to get the single now.

98. Boom Boom Pow - Black Eyed Peas (100)
99. How 'Bout You Don't - The Lost Trailers (RE-ENTRY)
100. Her Diamonds - Rob Thomas (DEBUT)

This week there are an even dozen songs debuting on the chart, as well as the Lost Trailers' "How 'Bout You Don't" sneaking back on. The highest new tune is by Pink, whose "Sober" is still in the top-10. The latest, "Please Don't Leave Me", is doing well in the US, as well as making the top-10 in Ireland, Germany, and Austria. It comes with a disturbing video, which may convince ex-hubby Carey Hart to stay away...

Next up is Britney Spears, also with another song hanging around, this time her former top-10 "Circus" at #57. Her new entry is the subtle "If You Seek Amy"...

Norweigan rap duo Madcon (and yes, it seems very weird to be typing that phrase) is comprised of Tshawe Baqwa and Yosef Wolde-Mariam have had five top-10 songs in their home country, with this song, "Beggin'", exploding all over the world, hitting the top-10 in at least 11 countries, and #1 in Norway, Belgium, France, and Spain. It samples the Frankie Valli single, and it's pretty groovy...

and for shits and giggles, here's the Frankie Valli/Four Seasons' version

Dance artist Chris Lake enlists singer Nastala for his latest, "If You Knew"

Nebraska-formed rock band 311 came onto the music scene with the Modern Rock minor hit "Do You Right" in 1993, and after bigger hits like "Down" and "All Mixed Up", they had their second #1 hit in 2004 with a reggae-lite rock remake of the Cure's "Lovesong". After another #2 hit, "Don't Tread On Me" in 2005, they've been out of the MR top-10 until now, with the first single from forthcoming album Uplifter, which will be out next month. Here's "Hey You"...

It seems like every week brings a debut from an American Idol alumnus, and this week isn't an exception, as Kellie Pickler, who came in sixth place in the fifth season, enters with the upbeat "message song" "Best Days Of Your Life"...

Well, as much as uber-dickhead Toby Keith gets on my last nerve, when he avoids the jingoistic bullshit, he can still put out a good song. Proof, his latest, the mournful "Lost You Anyway"...

Incubus has been pretty reliable lately, with their fifth consecutive single making my chart, following "Anna-Molly", "Dig", "Oil & Water", and "Love Hurts". It's from their greatest-hits compilation coming out, here's "Black Heart Inertia"...

Next is a smooth soul jam by singer K'Jon. Here's "On The Ocean"..

Long-hair country singer Jason Michael Carroll returns with the title track from his latest album, "Where I'm From"...

and finally, Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas comes on early with his red-hot track "Her Diamonds"...

Goodnight, everyone! I'll try to start back with more posting once my groove gets back, and I'm on vacation! W0ohoo!

This week there are twelve new songs on my chart, starting with the highest, by dance/R&B singer Deborah Cox. She's originally from Toronto, Canada, and for a while she's had the longest stay at #1 on the R&B chart, 14 weeks, for the classic "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here". She's also racked up 10 #1 Dance Club hits, and her latest may follow that path. Here's "Beautiful U R"....

Next is my pick for the week, by American punk band Green Day. Their long-awaited followup to Grammy winner American Idiot drops this week, and the first single is "Know Your Enemy".

Up now is Japanese-American (Hikaru) Utada, who has been a major success in Japan and the Far East, and five years ago had a #1 dance hit in the US with "Devil Inside". This time she rocks the dancefloors again with the song "Come Back To Me", and here's the official slower version video..

Los Angeles band Silversun Pickups land on my chart with "Panic Switch", a manic rocker about insanity...

I had featured British electronic duo La Roux previously on a Distant Shores Songs post, and now Elly Jackson and Ben Langmaid reach my big chart with the early 80's channeling "In For The Kill", which is a big hit in the UK.

Now for the country band that brought you "Chicken Fried", here's the more traditional "Whatever It Is"...with their live version from the House Of Blues in New Orleans (which Sugarbear and I passed by)..

Another DSS song is by French artist Helmut Fritz, produced by dance mixers Discobitch, with "Ca M'enerve", translated roughly to "It Annoys Me". It's the biggest selling download in France right now...

And 180 degrees from that song is Alan Jackson's heartfelt ballad to a passed loved one "Sissy's Song"..

Next up is someone I haven't heard from in a long time. Freedom Williams. Yes, "Gonna Make You Sweat" C&C Factory Freedom Williams. This time supporting NYC trio Speakerbox with "Mind Bounce".

There's two debut songs this week titled "Come Back To Me", and the second is by last season's American Idol winner David Cook...

Rock band Safetysuit are originally from Tulsa Oklahoma, but now are based in Nashville, and their second single to hit my chart is "Stay"...

and finally is the current #1 US Hit by the Black Eyed Peas, "Boom Boom Pow", sneaking in on MY chart in the #100 spot...

I think I'm gonna pass out...

Holy Christ.

I never thought this day would come, but my absolute favorite, Kylie Minogue, will be playing her first American (and Canadian) tour for six dates this fall. It's quite an irony, since her KylieX2008 DVD is en route to my house from Australia, to complete my collection of her concert DVD's. She puts on a show like nobody's business, and I hope to be able to get her tickets tomorrow on the presale. W00t!

next is U2, with their second single from their latest album. It's "Magnificent", and this is their performance from the Letterman Show..

Next is adult-pop singer Mat Kearney, and his new song "Closer To Love"..

next is alternative dance group MSTRKRFT teaming up with rapper NORE for "Bounce"..

A former Distant Shores Song, Calvin Harris' "I'm Not Alone" debuts on my top-100..

I'll try to update the links when I get back...and try to find the Charlie Song. Peace out.

weekend in Palm Springs..

Hey folks, sorry for the light posting, but in my official capacities I'm in Palm Springs California. It's a town with a pretty view of mountains, but I haven't had time to explore. I went to a cool street fair last night, and had a French crepe as well as a Guatemalan taco. There were street musicians, and lots of vendors, and if you're visiting the area, it's a great way to spend a Thursday evening. It's every Thursday, and worth the time. I was beat by bedtime, but the extra sleep helped. Miss ya, Sugarbear.
